Submission Types

In the next Learning Lab you will create a traditional assignment for your course. We'll look at more of the options then, but the most crucial decision is choosing how your student will submit their work. The options are:

Online

This is the most commonly used submission type. Using it, you can allow students to upload their assignment as:

  • direct text entry, where your students type right in a text box
  • a file (Word, PDF, video...pretty much anything)
  • a website URL (link), useful if your students are creating the file in some other online service
  • a media recording, which allows students to click a button and record audio or video right there as part of the submission

On Paper

Use this assignment type when your students will be submitting their assignment outside of Canvas. This is commonly on paper (thus the name), but is used for any kind of material that is shared outside of the Canvas site.

No Submission

This type is exactly like the "On Paper" type except that, in the list of assignments the student sees, there will be no indicator that there is something to give the instructor. The Learning Labs in this class are assignments of this submission type.

External Tool

You can safely ignore this option.

Moving On

Once you have chosen an assignment and decided on the submission type, you are ready to set one up in your course!
