Outcome 1 is about being able to have a proper understanding of the audience, and make rhetorical choices for writings based on the audience. In order to appeal to audience effectively, my writing needs to include different sentence structures, word choices and anecdotes that are chosen based on specific audience. This skill will help us in the future because we will have different techniques to use for different audience. For example, writing a paper to a professor, writing a blog, and creating a resume to apply for jobs involves different rhetorical choice in order to make different genre convincing and successful. I feel that my SA1 best shows my fulfillment in this outcome. Also, SA 1 itself requires using different conventions to write for two different kinds of audience.

Different genres have different audience, thus different styles, tones and conventions are needed to be employed in writing. In my SA 1, I write two totally different pieces using different rhetorical choices in order to make the writing affective. The first is a letter to my principle in high school. Its purpose is to persuade my principle to adopt school uniforms in our school. First, it is a letter so it has a heading “Dear Principle Henderson” and an ending “Sincerely yours, Yuling Fan” (Fan 2). Secondly, since the audience is my high school principle, the tone I use in my writing is very formal and polite. By stating, “therefore, I state my great wish and desire towards the adoption of school uniforms and look forward to witnessing the prosperous future of our school,” I raise my request very politely (Fan 2). On the contract, the tone I use in my second piece is very informal since it is my diary, and the only audience is myself. Diaries can include abbreviation since only the writer, both the audience, needs to understand. I use abbreviation when I write, “OMG” (Fan 2). One can also express the true feeling in diary. I express my anger in my diary when I write “If I can punch on their faces without getting detentions, 100% sure I will do that. Be honest, I do want good looking clothes, but I can’t afford them” (Fan 1).

Through the rhetorical choices I make in these two pieces, I show my proper understanding of different audience. For the first piece, which is a letter to my high school principle to propose the idea of adopting school uniform in our school, in order to persuade the principle, I list three advantages of school uniforms. To support my argument, I include a quote “all kids son the same playing field in terms of their appearance.” from Director of the Center for Parent Education at the University of North Texas to increase my credibility (Fan 1). In my second piece, since no one else will see it, I use very aggressive language in my diary when I write “Mariah is just shallow and ugly.” These sentences and word choices are appropriate for diaries but not for a letter written to a principle (Fan 2).

The topic I wrote about is whether the students should wear uniforms or not, and my opinion is that school should adopt school uniforms. I chose a dairy entry and a letter as the two genres because these two genres are largely different. For the first one, the audience is just myself. It is a way for me to express the feelings that I can’t yell out at the public. While the letter is sent to the administration at John Carroll High School to persuade them that school uniforms should be introduced in our school (imagining that I am one of their students).

The effect I want for the letter to my principle was to have him adopt school uniforms in our school. In order to persuade him, I use very polite language and supported my arguments with evidence. The effect I want for my diary is to just simply make me happy by expressing my feelings. The words I use are rude but there won't be a consequence because no one would read my diary except me.
