Welcome to my official English 111 Portfolio! In this work, I will provide you with detailed explanations of how my writing in this course effectively demonstrates the course outcomes that we overviewed at the start of the quarter. Before you turn to the somewhat verbose explanations characteristic of my writing style, let me give a general overview of my entire portfolio. Throughout the text of my portfolio I intend to showcase three papers I have written, re-read, re-re-read, revised and re-revised for the course – three of my best works that I hope will give you a clear indication of my progress in this course and understanding of the course’s outcomes.
The explanatory content of this portfolio itself, much like the three major papers, also incorporates the course outcomes – albeit in a more casual manner. Constructing this portfolio has helped me hone my analytical and organization skills, to name a couple; these are skills required through one’s lifetime and not strictly within writing courses in school. The three major papers I include in the portfolio, together with its analytical component, have helped me gain confidence in my writing and become more prepared for any future endeavors I may have.
You will find that I have incorporated the theme of dragons, my favorite mythical creature, into my portfolio. To craft my work around this theme I sank deep into the deepest fantasies of my childhood and prepared a suitable scenario that includes both the required portfolio content and dragons – namely, offering the fantastic beings my course papers and my explanations of the skills I incorporate in each one, in exchange for my freedom from a (somewhat) brief captivity. I introduce this work in letter format, intended for none other than the marvelous dragons that had taken enough interest in me that they went out of their way to detain me. But why offer them writing? After years of studying the ways of dragons I learned that, above precious metals, the creatures take enormous interest in human literature and writing. My own work would surely be a fair price for my freedom. Starting below, I will provide you with the original English versions of all my work, the finished versions of which I have respectfully written in their own language and presented to them.
Magnificent and Intelligent Beings,
I hope you will not take my transgression too harshly. I mean no ill will in stumbling upon your mountainous dwelling. In exchange for my freedom, I offer you this document, a showcase of three major pieces of writing I have recently written and thorough explanations to accompany each. Each explanation discusses how each paper demonstrates one major outcome that the beings of my kind strive for in their writing. Given your admirable collection of human literature, I am sure you will recognize the authors and literature that I discuss in these three papers. In my first major paper, a proposal to adapt The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien into a different medium, I demonstrate Outcome 1 by paying close attention to my language, tone, and point of view to ensure its appropriateness to my intended audience and purpose. I incorporate Outcome 2 into my second major paper, a comparative analysis of Arabian Nights and The Ninety-Ninth Bride, by synthesizing and correctly citing evidence from the two texts to support a major claim. Last, I show Outcome 3 in my third major paper about The Ninety-Ninth Bride by presenting a complex claim, my explanation of its stakes, and integrating a clear organizational strategy.
Knowing how much you prize the writings of humankind, I am sure that this document will spark your interest. I hope it will give you a clear demonstration of how I have applied the outcomes in my work, and allow you to gain even higher appreciation of human writing.
