First Year Reflection Oct 12

I chose to come to the University of Washington in Bothell because I desired all of the resources of a large state college, while still being able to forge close relationships with those around me just like in a small private school. My ultimate goal in college is to obtain a bachelor’s in a major that I am passionate about, and expand myself both as a person and as a professional. However, I am still unsure of what major I should pursue, thus my first objective in this college is to explore a variety of classes in order to find the field I am most interested in. In this first year, my plan is to take go through the Discovery Core series whilst taking the variety of electives available to first year students. Some elective classes that already stick out to me more than the others on the list include: Introduction to law, Introduction to Business, Micro and Macroeconomics, and Psychology. I will also set up an appointment with the Academic (Pre-Major) Advisers at the Student Success Center to make sure I am on the right track and as an added plus they will be able to talk to me about my interests and point me towards a major(s) I might not have thought about. In addition, it will also be in my best interest to attend the Fall Job & Internship Fair on October 15 in Mobius Hall. I will be able to see the variety of companies (Around 50+ different companies and counting) that graduates are attempting to join, ask to see what steps students took to reach the point that they are in now, and what they will ultimately do with all the things they have acquired from University of Washington Bothell.
Throughout my experience at the University of Washington in Bothell, I will definitely use the Quantitative Skills Center and the Writing & Communication Center, as it is always great to use the resources available to you and I will inevitably need to with most of the classes I plan on trying out. In the week in a half that I’ve been in school, I have already been at the QSC four times to get Pre-Calculus help/do homework. In my first time going to the QSC I was relatively unaware of how the whole drop-in tutoring process worked and what is expected of me so they told me to read the QSC Standards Online. The whole goal of the Peer Tutors is not to feed you answers but to “Guide your learning” and “ encourage you to work on your own after some assistance”, which facilitates my learning of importance concepts significantly better because I am not simply writing what the tutor tells me to write. It is also important to note that the tutors are meant to be shared by everyone at the QSC and it is often impossible for them to stick with one student for than a one or two problems. Down the road, if I decide to take other subjects like chemistry or computer science or another math class, I know there are great people at the QSC who specialize in those subjects. Also when the time arises to turn in something to do with writing or do a presentation, I will set up an appointment with the Writing and Communication Center and try to get the most help out of those 25 minutes!
As time goes by I hope to finally find my passion, and after researching online I know I have the resources to help me along the way.
